Intel Rolls Out First Chip in Line Specifically for Embedded Communications

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 4, 2001--Intel Corporation (Nasdaq:INTC - news) today enhanced its approach to advanced building blocks for communications solutions by introducing the first in a line of chips specifically designed for the embedded industry.

The new product, the Intel® 82801E Communications I/O Controller Hub (C-ICH), integrates multiple communications ports, eliminating the need for separate networking chips that otherwise would be required. Reducing the number of chips in a design simplifies development and reduces the overall system cost of communications applications based on Intel® Pentium® III and Celeron® processors, such as voice-over-IP, firewall and virtual-private-network appliances.

The 82801E C-ICH features dual 10/100 media access controllers and universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter (UART) ports. Working with an appropriate Intel® chipset, the highly scalable C-ICH enables developers to create communications systems that can be easily tailored to meet changing needs.

"Faced with a demand for increasingly feature-rich communications products, developers of embedded communications solutions are demanding building blocks, such as the 82801E C-ICH, designed for their specific needs," said Joe Jensen, general manager of Intel's Embedded Intel Architecture Division. "This is the first offering in a series of embedded Intel Architecture components for communications products that will be available as standard building blocks."

To further simplify the design job, the new Intel® Communications I/O Controller Hub Value Appliance Reference Design provides developers a basic design for a standard printed circuit board that can be used in a variety of networking applications. The reference design can be downloaded at http://developer.intel.com/platforms/applied/eiacomm/value3/value3.htm without charge.

Production units of the Intel 82801E C-ICH will be available in January and will cost $15 in quantities of 10,000.

Intel, the world's largest chip maker, is also a leading manufacturer of computer, networking and communications products. Additional information about Intel is available at www.intel.com/pressroom.
